Bobcat Company is an American-based manufacturer of farm and construction equipment with its headquarters in West Fargo, North Dakota. Originally founded as Keller Welding & Repair in 1956 by brothers Louis and Cyril Keller, the company has gone through a series of mergers and acquisitions before becoming part of the Doosan Group in 2021.
In 1956, Eddie Velo approached the Kellers with a need for a machine small enough to maneuver inside his pole barn but light enough to operate on its upper level. The brothers developed a three-wheeled design with belt-driven transmission that they delivered to Velo on February 4, 1957. After learning about drawbacks with the belt-drive transmission system, they patented their more robust clutch-based system in 1958 which became the basis for Melroe’s M60 Loader.
Les Melroe and advertising agent Lynn Bickett settled on “Bobcat” as the trade name while exchanging ideas during a drive between Minneapolis and Gwinner while marketing these machines under Melroe Manufacturing Co.. This resulted into Bobcat brand being introduced when Melroe released its four wheeled M400 model Skid Steer Loader in 1960.
In 1969 Clark Equipment purchased Melroe manufacturing company which was then acquired by Ingersoll Rand Company 1995 after which it was sold off to Doosan Infracore for US$4.9 billion in 2007 making it one of few major manufacturing companies operating from North Dakota at that time . On January 1st 2018 , Doosan Infracore separated from Doosan Bobcats ending 7 year association . Recently , Hyundai Heavy Industries acquired 30% controlling stake from Doosan infracore acquiring majority shareholder rights over Bobcats who still remains part of doosans group .
